Keeping your cool during the heatwave

Keeping your cool during the heatwave

Summer is here, and with it comes the irresistible urge to cool down with a refreshing ice lolly. But before you reach for that sugary treat, consider a healthier and equally delicious alternative that you might be overlooking.

The Usual Suspects

Let’s start by taking a quick peek at the sugar content in some popular ice lollies:

  • Del Monte 100% Juice 75ml: 15 grams of sugar (almost 4 teaspoons)
  • Calippo Orange Mini 80ml: 14 grams of sugar (3.5 teaspoons)
  • Rowntrees Fruit Pastilles 65ml: 11.5 grams of sugar (almost 3 teaspoons)
  • Fab 58ml: 10 grams of sugar (2.5 teaspoons)
  • Twister Mini 50ml: 8.6 grams of sugar (just over 2 teaspoons)
  • Mini Milk 35ml: 4.1 grams of sugar (1 teaspoon)
  • Little Jude’s 35ml: 2.7 grams of sugar

(Note: Even though 100% juice lollies might sound healthy, the fruit juice is considered free sugar and acts in the body just like added sugar.)

Now, I get it, a lolly is a treat, but the impact of those treats can add up, especially if we have a good British summer (fingers crossed). Imagine dropping your sugar intake by 80% per lolly—huge, right? To put it in perspective, that’s over 3 teaspoons of sugar saved per lolly. If you indulge in one lolly a day and optimistically we get 30 days of perfect ice lolly weather this summer, you’ll be cutting out over 90 teaspoons of sugar from your diet. That's a sweet deal!

Sure, the sugar content varies per lolly, partly due to their size, but that's an important point. Portion control matters, and let’s be honest, if it's in front of us, we’ll have no problem finishing it off. The good news is, you don’t need a lot to satisfy that sweet tooth. So why not switch things up and enjoy a healthier treat? You’ll feel better and still get to enjoy the summer fun!

How much sugar can we eat (according to the NHS)?

  • Adults: No more than 30g of free sugars a day (7 teaspoons).
  • Children aged 7 to 10: No more than 24g of free sugars a day (6 teaspoons).
  • Children aged 4 to 6: No more than 19g of free sugars a day (4.75 teaspoons).

If these lollies are for your kids, keep in mind that one Calippo provides 73% of a young child’s (4-6 years) daily sugar intake, or 58% for kids aged 7 and above. With just one of these lollies, you're consuming a significant chunk of your daily sugar allowance. So, it's worth considering your choices and opting for a healthier option

What else can I do?

Embrace Wholesome Ingredients

When choosing ice cream, opt for brands that prioritise natural and wholesome ingredients. Look for labels that boast real fruit, natural sweeteners like honey or maple syrup, and minimal use of artificial additives or preservatives. Ice creams made from high-quality ingredients not only taste better but also provide essential nutrients.

DIY Nice Cream

Nice cream has gained popularity among health-conscious individuals as a dairy-free and guilt-free alternative to traditional ice cream. It is made entirely from frozen fruits, making it rich in vitamins, minerals, and fibre. Plus, it's vegan-friendly and can be customised to cater to various dietary preferences.

Sorbet Sensations

Sorbet is an excellent option for those seeking dairy-free and lighter alternatives to traditional ice cream. Made from fruit purees and natural sweeteners like agave syrup or honey, sorbets are refreshingly light, bursting with natural fruit flavours, and naturally low in fat.

Frozen Yogurt - A Probiotic Treat

Frozen yoghurt offers a unique twist on traditional ice cream by incorporating beneficial probiotics derived from yoghurt cultures. Probiotics play a crucial role in supporting a healthy gut, promoting digestion, and boosting the immune system.

The Art of Portion Control

While enjoying ice cream in its various forms, it's essential to practise portion control. Savouring smaller portions mindfully allows you to fully appreciate the flavours and textures without overindulging.

Simple swaps

A Simple Swap for a Healthier SummerMaking the switch from sugary lollies like Calippo or even Del Monte 100% Juice to Mini Milkor little Jude’s might seem small, but it’s a powerful step towards healthier eating habits. It's a win-win situation: you get to enjoy a refreshing treat while slashing your sugar intake.

So, next time you’re reaching into the freezer, remember that not all ice lollies are created equal. Here's to a healthier summer!
