Unsure which Seasonal Sandwich to Choose? It’s understandable there are quite a few on the market, and with each supermarket/café/shop offering a slightly different variety. We’ve had a look at the best, the worst, the turkeys, the brie and cranberries, the vegan and even the gluten free!
A Little History on the Beloved Sandwich
Sandwiches have been enjoyed for centuries, becaming more popular in Western culture during the 18th century, when they were commonly eaten by working-class people who needed a quick and portable meal. In the 19th century, the sandwich became even more popular, and it was at this time that the sandwich was named after the Earl of Sandwich, who is said to have preferred this type of meal. One of the great things about sandwiches is that they are so versatile. They can be made with almost any type of bread, from white or wheat to rye or sourdough.
When it comes to Christmas, they are filled with all our favourite Christmas fillings; from roast turkey to pigs in blankets, brie and cranberry to more recent vegan alternatives. We are a nation that loves a sandwich, so let’s take a closer look at some of the sandwiches out there this year…
No Two Sandwiches the Same
That’s right! They may all have similar names, but each sandwich is slightly different. They all vary in sugar, salt, protein, fat but also in flavour, texture, and value for money. We’ve looked at the packaging, Sunna's tasted the sandwiches and now we are ready to share the results.

The BEST
- Sainsburys Brie & Cranberry – great taste, great value at just £2.95 and low in sugar 3.5g per serving.
- Sainsburys Turkey Feast – great taste, great value at just £2.95 and low in sugar at 4.7g per serving.
The WORST
- Starbucks Cran-Merry Focaccia was unfortunately the worst sandwich based on taste. *Possibly would have been better toasted.
- Pret A Manger Turkey Feast – this guy had a whole load of sugar in it, 15g to be precise that’s over 3 teaspoons full!
